The gallery is delighted to present our second solo exhibition with Hong Kong artist Tobe Kan.
The show – ZYGOMORPHIC CHROMATIC – is a continuation of the artist’s recent show at Hong Kong’s Gallery Exit, titled Liminal Interval.
In the exhibition, Zygomorphic Chromatic, we follow Tobe's journey as she studies life and death, and focuses on themes of transition, uncertainty, and impermanence. Exploring the state of in-betweenness and of transitioning from one state to another, while also emphasizing the displacement of time, Kan is inspired by the fleeting moments of dawn and dusk. In her paintings, while highlighting natural light and shadow, Kan’s use of several shades of blue and white acrylic are accented with textural interest in oil pastel. The show also features a special botanical installation by Patricio Rivera of Twelve Thirty Four, a Dallas-based floral designer.
From the title, Zygomorphic is when a flower has one line of symmetry and refers to the collaboration with Kan and Rivera. This duality is also seen in Kan's show, Liminal Interval, and how her work is translated into a show in the USA with similar themes. Chromatic and Interval - both being musical terms - refer to distance and scale.
Through Kan’s study of flora discovered in urban settings, where she finds inspiration from parks, private gardens, forests, and cemeteries, Rivera translates her work into living installations.
The gallery is also pleased to present a special interpretation of our current exhibition to highlight the collaboration where the viewer is suspended in a space that is neither fully day nor fully night as the imagery transitions from Kan's paintings to the live installations.
Zygomorphic Chromatic will feature new acrylic and oil pastel paintings with digital prints* on organza fabric completing the installation (*display only).
